Lacrosse practice plan (for typical evening in gym)

Nov 18th, 2005 | By Phil v. Sassen | Popularity: 3% | Category: Lacrosse

Lacrosse - the fastest game on two feet - ist hart.

Four sessions – about 20 Minutes each. First two without pads, second two with pads. Mix up the sequence – add and subtract drills.

Session Zero– warm u, stretching
Session One – no pads:

  • ground balls going away

  • two lines facing each other – passes head on, players running toward each other, use pretty much the length of the field
  • the exchange toss – two lines facing each other, player pops up the ball as the player coming towards him runs in to take the ball
  • shooting practice for attack and midfield using taped goal (rotate at least two feeders) – practice hitting the upper right hand corner pr the lower left hand corner; defence to practice over-the-shoulder passes

Session Two – no pads

  • shooting practice – using taped goal – quick sticks for attack high and low on the right side, bounces for midfielders; Clearing practice for defense at other end of court

  • dodging around standing defensemen. 3-4 defensemen in a row the length of the court. Stand more or less motionless – attack and midfield do spin dodges for first minutes, then switch to face dodges

Session Three – pads

  • One on one – defense checks, poke checks, pushes off, blocks – while attack and midfield try to hold onto the ball (assume a goal is in a specific direction behind the defenseman so that if an attack/midfielder gets free, that`s good for the attacker, but no good for the defender). One pair at a time – for a few seconds each

  • Dodging – same as 2b, but this time, the defenders can check the attack/midfield stick
  • Clearing – 3 (defense) on 2, 4 on 3, whatever makes sense, but no more than 4 on 3

Session Four – pads, including goalie

  • Two (attack) on one, goalie in, players come down the field and try to get ball to man in the clear for a shot. Must get in position for a shot quickly or whistle will blow. If defense gets ball, to try one-pass clear
  • Three (attack) on two, goalie in, players work extra man attack and defense. Take your time – try to get a shot off within 30 seconds.
